Government Health Care Is Not The Answer

Posted by: Dean Heller in Health Care Reform on Print

The following originally appeared as an op-ed in the Reno Gazette-Journal. -Staff

Today, health care coverage is unattainable for many American families. About 182 million Americans currently receive some form of employer-sponsored health care. With so many affected, Congress should ensure that any changes protect those already with medical coverage. If you like your coverage, you should be able to keep it -- not be forced into a "one size fits all" government program.

I am concerned that the majority party's "health-care reform" is merely a scheme to place bureaucrats in charge of a government-run health care system. Under their proposal, about 120 million people would lose their current health insurance to a public plan.

Supporters claim this plan will compete on a level playing field with private insurance. This is simply untrue. If the federal government begins providing health insurance, your taxes will support that plan regardless of your participation. Such changes disadvantage existing health plans, resulting in fewer individual choices, rationing of care and higher taxes. We cannot ignore the 47 million Americans without health insurance, but, in providing them coverage, our objective should be quality, affordable health care for all.

The challenges facing current government-run health care programs, like Medicare, should caution lawmakers. Doctors are leaving Medicare because inadequate payment rates fail to cover the costs of the care they provide. Therefore, older Nevadans have difficulty finding a primary care physician. Seniors in rural Nevada face greater challenges. The American College of Physicians estimates that 45,000 fewer doctors will exist than needed by 2025, and fewer remaining doctors will accept new Medicare patients.

Meanwhile, Medicare waste, fraud and abuse rob taxpayers of $10 billion annually. Compounding the problem, the Medicare Trust Fund will go bankrupt in about 10 years. Instead of addressing Medicare solvency, the majority party wants a new, bigger, costlier government system.

I am also concerned about health-care accessibility, likely made worse by the government rationing care. A little-known provision in the stimulus bill provided $1.1 billion for medical research that will consider cost in comparing various treatments. Government-run health-care programs in other countries have used similar studies to determine what treatments and services will and won't be covered.

Instead of this misguided approach, Americans should help improve the system by understanding, choosing and managing their health care needs. We should lower costs by curbing frivolous lawsuits and runaway jury rewards that only benefit trial lawyers. I support giving Americans more choices to pick the coverage that meets their needs. Moreover, we need better prevention tools and incentives to keep people healthy, instead of just treating their illnesses. My goal is to make health care affordable and insure every American.

Government spending does not increase health-care affordability. Moreover, the administration's proposal dramatically increases taxes, stifling our struggling economy. Our citizens need more choices, better access, and higher quality care, not another government-run program.

Please fight to vote down Obama's Healthcare Plan. We need our Health system revamped, ie.,malpractice suits from attorney's seeking to line their pockets. The FDA's continued nonsense regarding regulations for natural healthcare products. How about the FDA promoting the regulation of tobacco companies. Gee, I wonder why that bill passed could it be that RJ Reynolds and Philip Morris sold nearly 6 billion less cancer stocks than Q1'08. Newport owned by Lorillard is the country's best selling menthol. This bill will give the FDA the power to both ban menthols and stop new competition. I don't smoke and do have objections to being in a smoking environment - But, this is the US and what is happening to our freedoms.

If Obama has his way he will strip all citizens of freedoms and bankrupt our country. I'm not addressing other issues like California, Bonds, Federal Reserve, Zars that bipass Congress and report directly to Obama. My understanding is that he should be impeached, for breaking the law. Congressman Heller, please do all you can to vote NO to healthcare and cap n trade.

Obama and his henchmen keep violating our constitution. The Republicans just sit back and let him continue his violations. Why are the protectors of our constitution no taking the various violations before the Supreme Court? Our representatives have promised to uphold the contitution. so do it! Nice article, but it could be extended to address the current problems of over-regulation. The future government takeover is a threat, but we aren't great now, either. Government needs to get out of insurance companies, get rid of the FDA, the AMA, state medical boards, and itself really.

What's the rush with Obama trying to push thru the Health plan? Are there other ideas out there on what to do? If so.. Where are they? Why have we not heard about them? Why are we not allowed to vote on some of these items. Smooth talker, charismatic, bright, and manipulative....Talks about non-partisan and how he listens to everyone.. but does what HE wants in the end. Does he have control issues?? This whole things just scares me.. once it is in place it will be hard to reverse. I don't relish the idea of waiting 3-4 months for an operation or sitting in an emergency ward for 4 1/2 hours-- Reason? Drs. have been bailing out because their patients either have to pay cash or there are very few with "private insurance" mainly because everyone has been forced into the government program. When will the American people wake up? I know it is a hard job but thanks for what you do Dean. Stay true to yourself..

Why do we want healthcare to be something that comes with a profit margin?
written by Marie Gilbert , July 18, 2009
I certainly get a little nervous everytime I see the high profits drug and insurance companies post EVERY quarter... the sicker people get the more money they make. They don't turn profits for prevention, for healthy lifestyles, or low cost solutions that help peole heal quickly. I would like to see regulation that encouraged HEALTHY outcomes, not high profit ones.

Give tax breaks to family physicians and pediatricians that are open 24/7 so there are options *other* than the high cost emergency rooms on a weeknight or Sunday morning if a child gets sick or I need stitches. I want to see SMART progress... and no more insurance lobbyists with their high dollar campaign contributions lurking around congress taking people to lunch.

This healthcare program is an outrage! And why are government officials exempt? It
doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Anytime someone says you must decide right now without allowing time to read what
you're signing, it's a CLEAR indication that something is wrong. That’s just basic
common sense. Instead of standing up and insisting time is allowed before voting on
major decisions, Senators and Congressmen are going along like children playing
follow the leader.

What’s Obama holding over our representatives? Is it "vote my way or else?" He is
destroying this country little by little and this has to stop. His plans have been evil since
the beginning. It's obvious that he is a liar, yet our representatives act like nothing is
wrong. Action needs to be taken. Can’t anyone step out of their comfort zone, speak up
and question Obama's decisions?

We've hired our representatives to do a job for us. Please do whatever you can to get
others to vote this healthcare program down. Citizens are watching and representatives
should realize that their reelection is questionable at best.

Please keep up your good work. We are behind you all the way.

Dear Rep. Heller,
My wife and I are seniors living in Sparks, NV and are very disturbed about the changes to Health Care as proposed by Obama. The seniors on Medicare will have health procedures and medication cut back and the cost of this plan will be enormous at a time our country is in recesion.
Please vote against this Obamination plan.
Sincerly,
Bob Rayppy
