Why I'm Running

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Your past support has meant a lot me and for this reason I wanted you to be among the first to know that I am running for the United States Senate.

It is difficult to see so many people hurting in my home state. As many of you know, I grew up in Nevada and my wife Lynne and I have raised our family here. We see the tough choices our friends, neighbors, and family members are making every day and I see how poor decisions in Washington are impacting their lives.

This is not the first time that Nevadans have endured tough times and it won't be the last, but I know that there are better days ahead.

Our strength as a state and a nation is bigger than the troubles of today. However, it is also incumbent upon us to affect change in difficult times to create a better future.

As families across Nevada struggle to pay their bills and fight to keep their homes, Barack Obama and his beltway allies are proposing record spending that will add to America's job killing debt from a stratospheric $14 trillion to a staggering $20 trillion.

We cannot allow this to happen.

We can change the course we are on by taking action today. The choices we make can lead to big changes in our lives and the lives of our loved ones. This is a crossroad that will not only change Nevada, but significantly change the direction of our nation for years to come.

If we are to turn our economy around, we must remove impediments that have caused economic stagnation and the inability of businesses to create new jobs. Not continue with business as usual.

We cannot ignore our nation's very serious fiscal problems and continue to allow Obama's big government job killing agenda to continue.

I have long been an opponent of reckless government spending and continue to support a balanced budget. In 2008, I stood up to former President Bush, then Senator Obama, and Washington special interests and said no to the Wall Street bailout. In fact, I was the only member of the Nevada delegation to vote against the Wall Street bailout, not once but twice. My view then, just as it is now, is that debt fueled bailouts only hurts long-term economic growth and places taxpayers on the hook for the excesses of Wall Street.

Now I want to take this fight to the United States Senate.

Congress can no longer refuse to make tough fiscal decisions and stick our children and grandchildren with the massive debt that has been allowed to accrue for far too long. We must take control of government spending to instill long-term economic growth in our country.

There are those who believe government spending is not the problem and we should simply raise taxes and treat American public as an ATM. Let me assure you that I believe Washington has a spending problem—not a revenue problem—and that tax increases are not the answer especially in our current economic environment.

Just like many families across our state, Lynne and I sit around the table and discuss the direction of our country, the future of our children, and the needs of the people of our great state who have endured in this struggling economy for far too long.

It is time to move beyond the failed policies of the past and create real economic growth in Nevada.

I know that the tough times are not yet over. However, I also know that there are better times ahead.

Together we can move our country in a new direction, get Nevadans working again, and create a more prosperous future for us and our children.

It has been an honor to serve you and our great state in the House. I hope I can count on your continued support. With your help, we can bring a new conservative majority to the United States Senate.

Thank you for your public service; you have been an excellent representative for us, and we have no doubt you'll continue to be. It is obvious the move to Senate was a result of a well thought out decision. We trust you to make the right decisions for Nevada and for yourself, good luck with your campaign.

You have my support. I think you have been working very hard for us and you have not been willing to compromise your principles. I think that is so important because it is not the norm for so many politicians. There is a good old boy network of elites that are afraid of loosing their power and do not like the simple message that the proper role of Government is to follow the Constitution. SMALLER GOVERNMENT, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, PROTECT US FROM ENEMIES WITHOUT AND WITHIN. That simple message is the only thing that can save this country. They use the same rhetoric that the Progressives use and it seems to me that they are part of the "subjugation of the masses crowd". They DO NOT want to understand that right is right and wrong is wrong.

Congratulations on your announcement. You will make a great Senator for Nevada based on your record and beliefs. Go Heller for 2012!!!

Thank you for your service in the Nevada Assembly, as Nevada's Secretary of State, and as our representitive in Congress. I know all of us that have voted for you in the past will do so again and you will be our newest senator.

Give em Heller, 2012! Go Dean. My husband used to play basketball with you years ago. He respected you on and off the court. God Bless.

Congratulations. This is good news. Thanks for voting against the Wall Street bailouts. We should be arresting these banking executives that created the financial collapse and mess from which we are still trying to recover. Why we ever handed them money for robbing Americans is beyond ridiculous.

Thanks for also trying to curb government spending and working on repealing the health care bill. Health insurance system needs to be overhauled but this bill is not the answer.

Thanks for also working on keeping education at the state level and out of the Federal government. The states know what's best for their states.

Lastly, thanks for voting to NOT renew the Patriot Act which is a complete violation of our constitutional rights.

Yes, you have my vote. I wish there were more people running for senator with the courage to stand up and fight for what is right.

Go Dean, I have liked and respected you back when we crossed trails during your first and successful campaign for Secretary of State in 1994. You did an admirable 8 year job cleaning up the SOS offices and your constituents are proud that you represent them so very well in CD2. You are the best candidate the R's could possible field. Always remember to GO WITH YOUR GUT. With some luck....the Democrats may run a Baboon against you.
My Best Regards,
Bob McCaffery

I wish I could be a registered voter in the state of Nevada, but sadly my congressional respresentatives include the likes of Dick Durbin. Your announcement is very refreshing when placed against the standard 'business as usual' platform that most candidates seem to be espousing these days. Best of luck!
Mike Boster commented on 16-Mar-2011 10:50 AM
Dean,
Best of luck in 2012. Nevada has steep hills to climb in improving our economy and especially our education system. Our kids deserve better than they are receiving now. I appreciate your common sense approach and keeping your campaign on the high road of dignity and respect. You have my vote!

Yu have always had my vote and you will again. I think that you are a superior Representative. I only hope the state Republican Party can offer up a good candidate to replace you in the house.

Awesome! Hopefully you'll have large signs this campaign, i've got places for them! Now we just need someone as great as you to fill the big shoes you've left in Congress, hopefully Lt. Governor Krolicki.

On your team 100% will work my booty off for you ! Nevada loves you Dean You are an endangered species "An honest and ethical politician" Ready to go to work for you .

I am gald that you are running. It is not extreme to want to balance the budget and stop the deficit spending. This is contrary to comments from Senator Reid. Senator Reid is out of touch and spending cuts along with reductions in the Federal Payroll are
a must. We cannot affod the future pensions and medical costs either for the 245,000 new Federal Employees added by teh Democrats in the last two years.
Hogan commented on 11-Apr-2011 12:57 PM
Dean, Please tell me what you are willing to cut, Medicare, Social Security or Defense? You know that this is where the greatest spending is, so tell me what you will cut to effect a meaningful reduction in government spending! Thank you, Hogan

Dean your leadership shows through the people that work with and beside you. At times I have had issues and concerns that shook me to my core. You know my passion for protecting my Veteran Families. You have been there, as has your team. So, I endorse
you. As the author of the concurrent receipt act, a 100%disabled veteran too. I can not think of a better partner we can have for the fight ahead of us. Dean. Thank you for your leadership.

Hopefully I have the right republican that put a bill through to take away seniors' medicare. I want to make sure I am sending my message to the right person. I am republican but am ashamed of you all that are trying to rid us of medicare. My donations
will stop! The older citizens worked all of their lives, the economy has striped them of everything and now my party is trying to do the same. I cannot believe this, I have been a loyal voter of republicans and now I guess I will switch!!!!!!!!!! I and many
many others have paid and paid and paid for social security and medicare all of our lives and you representatives are trying to gut us out of all that we worked for, we don't have your pensions to sustain us. I thought that you would fight Obama's socialism
& protect us from his healthcare. I am shocked at you and all the republicans that I just voted for. God help us all! We need to save social security and medicare or all the seniors are doomed!!! Also if you had any good intentions you just may have lost the
next election for the republicans!
Joe Elliott commented on 22-Apr-2011 08:50 PM
Hi Dean, Glad to hear you are running for the U.S. Senate. I think you have done a superior job throughout your political career. We were freshmen Republican Assemblymen back in 1991. I've been out of politic for 20 years, but I'd sure love to run for
your vacant seat. But it has all become so complicated and high tech with computers and web pages and facebook etc. A guy would need a computer geek for a campaign manager. Back then it was lot of walking and knocking on doors--a lot simpler and more personal.
I think Brian Sandoval will appoint you and it couldn't come at a better time.
Joe Brecht commented on 13-Jul-2011 06:20 PM
Can you tell me whats going on with our gov. It seems that all of you can't get together on any thing that helps this country. This thing about the budget is starting to worry allot of people, the ones like me who depend on our social security. It is coming
more and medicare. We no that the government has been taking money out of the trust found for years. Lets try to pull this country back to the place people have been trying to get in for years.I hope you and all the other Senate's can pull together. We have
the power to remove any or all of those who do not seem to care about we the people.
Connie commented on 13-Jul-2011 07:59 PM
HELLER, JUST HOW ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE IN REGARDS TO SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE? YOUR NEXT JOB DEPENDS UPON THE WAY YOU VOTE! WE HAVE PAID INTO IT AND EXPECT IT TO BE THERE FOR US. YOU REPRESENT ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA NOT JUST THE RICH!!!!!
REMEMBER WE ALL VOTE AND THE MIDDLE CLASS IS A MUCH LARGER VOTING POOL. STOP THE MADNESS IN WASHINGTON - WE DESERVE BETTER!
John commented on 01-Dec-2011 07:34 PM
Thank you Dean Heller! It's good to know you are there. I am for less government, and less regulation. I am for more self reliance and more personal accountability. I have great fear of what Oboma and his people have done to this nation and am anxious
to reverse it! I am willing to help any way I can.
